Jim, a Current Parent
My child didn't laugh, make eye contact and lived life like they were trying to disappear. Even with two loving parents and two loving siblings, they were alone and withering…I heard about Plaza Academy from another parent & my wife and I decided to tour. We found Plaza Academy to be different. Seeing the students' relationship with the staff, the class size and the style of learning gave us some hope….As we were touring the classes, one of the students said to my child, "Girl, I love your look." That was it. That simple acknowledgement of humanity and acceptance turned our life 180 degrees… My child's light was reborn at Plaza Academy.

When I first got to Plaza Academy, things were not going well. I had lost motivation to do school work and things like large class sizes allowed me to fall behind without anyone noticing. I barely passed my freshman year and it was more of the same with the first half of my sophomore year. However, once I moved to Plaza Academy things quickly turned around for me. I went from mostly D's back to mostly A's and B's, and now I’m graduating a year ahead of schedule. Thanks to the environment this school creates not only was I able to succeed, but I thrived.
I want to take a moment to thank the teachers here who helped me get to where I am now. Because of them I am on a career path I am excited about and feel prepared for the future. Thank you to every single staff member here who helps to make this school the best it can be.

I’m so proud to be standing here tonight. School hasn’t always been the easiest for me. We as teenagers doubt ourselves. Especially in school. I am one of those kids who doubt myself academically, or at least I was. Plaza Academy has helped me and other kids like me learn to have confidence in our abilities and to be our authentic self. Many times the teachers here at Plaza have pushed me to be my best self. They helped me find my passion for writing, and now I am in the process of developing my own book of poetry.
I want to thank everybody at Plaza Academy who molded this school into another home. You have all made this school a safe and welcoming environment. I will miss this school very much but It has shown me that I want to continue my education. I plan on attending Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan in the fall. I plan on majoring in computer science and to minor in theater since I’ve always had a passion for the art of both programming and music. I’m very excited for my future, and I wish my grandmother could watch me walk this stage tonight. I know she would be just as proud of me as I am of myself and my fellow classmates. Congratulations to everyone and thank you all for coming.

I came to Plaza as a scared little sophomore and I quickly learned that I no longer needed to worry about the “regular” high school BS. I looked around and realized that everyone here is here for a reason and I think that we all thrive in that environment knowing we could shamelessly be ourselves. If you told me years ago that I would be thanking my teachers for being such amazing people I would’ve laughed! But I wouldn’t be here if my teachers didn’t believe in me. Thank you to the staff for showing me that no matter what, I’m going to be okay. And thank you to the student body for never making anyone feel uncomfortable ever.

(My son) has been enrolled in three different schools in the past two years and he has showed no interest in any of the schools... He seems very interested in attending Plaza Academy, when he comes home it seems to be all that he can talk about. He seems so excited about attending school now and its is very surprising to me because before he could care less about school. He has been going to bed early to make sure that he's up and ready for school every morning. He is even taking forth the effort of getting himself up in the morning and making sure that he has transportation to school.
